Gastbeitrag der GAPP-Austauschschüler Adam Lehman & Gavin Rowe

Our experience in Hamburg so far has been nothing less than fantastic. We’ve been on many excursions to explore the city. Probably one of the most beautiful part is the Hafencity, the view of and from the Elbphilharmonie is a great way to see the city, and the skyline of the city. We have been on a Stadtrundfahrt, this allowed us to receive information about the many parts of Hamburg including the infamous Reeperbahn, the Rathaus and, the many churches, including the Saint Michael church. Hamburg is starting to feel like home to many of us.

Outside of our group sightseeing activities the students in GAPP are enjoying hanging out with one another and their exchange partners. Students have been shadowing their exchange partners and sitting in on classes at GOA. It was very cool to see the difference between GOA and Melrose High School. One aspect that has stood out to us is the pauses between classes, students at MHS do not have breaks between classes, only a lunch period. Outside of school, students will usually go to the Alstertal EKZ or into the city with their partners and host-families and enjoy the activities offered there. A favorite of the visiting students has been the Miniatur Wunderland, it’s so cool!

On the 12th and 13th of April our group visited Berlin. We took an ICE train from Hamburg Hauptbahnhof and it was only about an hour and a half ride to the City, where we then took the S-bahn to our hotel. From there we split up for lunch, and after we had our river cruise on the Spree. We then walked to Alexanderplatz and took the elevator up the Fernsehturm, and got to see a great view of the city.  Being in Berlin we had to take the advantage and visit The East Side Gallery to see the historic Berlin wall. The next day we got a tour of the Reichstag and visited the Brandenburg gate. We ended our trip to Berlin with lunch at the Berlin mall and headed back to the Hauptbahnhof and got onto our train to Hamburg, arriving at around 8:30 pm.

But we’re only half-way through our visit, we still have much to do, including attending a HSV match, and a few more excursions.
